Install PDI Version 5.1

Overview

Explains how to install PDI Version 5.1.

After you have created an upgrade plan, shut down PDI Version 5.0.x, then install PDI version 5.1.

Make sure that you review the Minor Functionality Changes section before you proceed.

Shut Down PDI 5.0.x

Back up the DI Repository and stop all PDI components, as well as the web application server.

  1. Ensure no users are currently using the Spoon client application to connect to the DI Repository.
  2. Stop the DI Repository.
  3. Stop the web application server.
  4. Back up the DI Repository using the directions provided by your databases' vendor (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle).
  5. Verify that the web application server has been stopped by doing one of the following.
  • If you are a Linux user run this command from a terminal window.

If you have deployed the DI Server on JBoss, substitute jboss for tomcat in the following code.

$> ps -ef | grep tomcat
  • If you are a Windows user open the task manager and search for the Tomcat6.exe or a JBoss process. If you are on Windows 7 or Windows 2008, you can access Services and see if it shows as running or stopped.
  1. If you installed the DI Server on Windows using the Installation Wizard, you need to stop the repository database, which runs as a Windows service.  To do this, access the Windows Administrative Tools > Services Manager then stop the Pentaho Solution Repository service.

Install Version 5.1 of the DI Server

Install version 5.1 of the BA Server using the Wizard, Install with Your Own Repository, or Manual method.  Use the same method you used to install version 5.0.x of the software.  You can assign ports during installation.  Default ports are listed in the following table.

Component Default Start Up Port
PostgreSQL 5432
MySQL 3306
Oracle 1521
DI Server 9080

Use the Wizard

Use this method only if you used the Wizard to install 5.0.x of DI.

  1. Back up your /pentaho directory.
  2. Rename the /pentaho directory to pentaho-old.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Install All DI Components guide.

Use the Install with Your Own Repository Method

Use this method only if you used the Install with Your Own Repository method to install 5.0.x of DI.  (This method is also known as the Archive installation method.)

  1. Back up your /pentaho directory.
  2. Rename the /pentaho directory to pentaho-old.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Install DI Server with Your Own Repository guide.

Use the Manual Method

Use this method only if you used the manual method to install version 5.0.x of DI.

  1. Back up your /pentaho directory and pentaho-di.war.
  2. Rename the /pentaho directory to pentaho-old.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Use Manual DI Installation guide.

Install Version 5.1 of the Client Tools

To upgrade the Pentaho client tools on user workstations, download and run the Wizard installer or install the individual client tool packages.  When you install you must:

  1.     Rename or remove the old client tools.
  2.     Use the instructions in the Install Only DI Tools guide.

The only Pentaho client tools that store user settings are Report Designer and Pentaho Data Integration (Spoon). When you upgrade these programs, the new instance detects the custom settings from the old instance and uses them automatically.  No settings or content files are stored in the /pentaho/design-tools/report-designer/ or /pentaho/design-tools/data-integration/directories (or the subdirectories for any other client tools).  Custom user settings are stored in these directories.

  •     Report Designer:  $HOME/.pentaho
  •     Spoon: $HOME/.kettle
