Installation

There are four primary methods for installing the Pentaho Suite. Based on your installation goals, this article helps you decide which installation method is best for you.

To determine the best installation path for your overall goal, consider the following questions and recommendations. 

If you only need to upgrade your current version of the BA or DI components to the newest version, see Pentaho Upgrade.

The Pentaho products consist of Business Analytics (BA) and Data Integration (DI) components. Which components you use depend on your workflow and what your environment supports. For more information, review About Pentaho Products.

What is Your Goal? Do you want to install and evaluate the Pentaho Suite?
  • Do you want to install the Pentaho Server and run it in a production environment?  
  • Do you want to run the Pentaho Server on the version of Tomcat which we supply?
  • Do you want to deploy the Pentaho Server on your existing Tomcat or JBoss web app server?
  • Do you want to install the Pentaho Repository on the PostgreSQL database that Pentaho supplies?
  • Do you want to install the Pentaho Repository on another database that you supply, such as Oracle or MySQL? 
Do you want to install Business Analytics (BA) or Data Integration (DI) components only?
Purpose

Quick installation method for evaluating the Pentaho Suite.

Production use with a Tomcat web application server provided by Pentaho. Production use with your existing Tomcat or JBoss web application server.  Rapid development use on a client machine.

Summary

This method installs both BA and DI components. This method uses an installation wizard and is the quickest and easiest installation option. It includes everything you need to run the Pentaho Suite. You may choose which Pentaho components to install.

Note: We recommend using this installation method for evaluation purposes only.

This method installs the Pentaho Server, BA plugins, and DI plugins. If you are installing Pentaho in a production environment, use this method to install the Pentaho Server on a server machine while installing design tools on separate client workstations.

It requires that you download and install Pentaho installation files. 

 

You must also choose the Pentaho Repository database that you want to use, but you must download and install it yourself.

This method installs the Pentaho Server and BA plugins. If you are installing Pentaho in a production environment, you would use this method to install the Pentaho Server on a server machine while installing design tools on separate client workstations.

It requires that you download and install Pentaho installation files.

You must also choose the Pentaho Repository database that you want to use, but you must download and install it yourself.

Install Pentaho manually when you want to use your own web application server, particularly if you must comply with your company standard database platform or web application server, such as JBoss.

This method installs design tools only. If you are installing Pentaho in a production environment, use this method to install design tools on client workstations while installing the Pentaho Server on a separate server machine.

Data Integration (PDI) plugins, which are needed at design and runtime, should be installed on the server and on client workstations.

Installed Components When you run the installation wizard, you can choose to install some or all of the following components in the Pentaho Suite:
  • Pentaho Server.
  • BA and DI design tools including Report Designer, Schema Workbench, Metadata Editor, Aggregation Designer, Dashboard, and the PDI client.
  • Utilities, such as Pan, Kitchen, and Carte.
  • All BA plugins including Analyzer and Interactive Reporting.
  • Select DI plugins such as Big Data and Marketplace.

By default, the Archive Installation of the Pentaho Suite installs:

  • BA plugins (such as Analyzer and Interactive Reporting).
  • DI plugins (such as Big Data and Marketplace).
When you install the Pentaho Server using the manual method, you can choose which BA plugins you want to install (such as Analyzer and Interactive Reporting).

This method installs one or all of the following items:

  • BA design tools: Report Designer, Schema Workbench, Metadata Editor, Aggregation Designer, and Dashboard.
  • The PDI client (Spoon).
  • Utilities, such as Pan, Kitchen, and Carte.
  • Select DI plugins such as Big Data and Marketplace.
