Post-upgrade tasks

Parent article

After you upgrade your Pentaho products to version 9.1, you may need to perform a few of the following optional tasks depending on your Pentaho configuration.

  • Apply customizations

If you previously customized configuration files, you can merge your customizations into Pentaho 9.1 versions of the files available through a downloaded ZIP file.

  • Update the default documentation version link

If you link to specific documentation articles in your Pentaho configuration, you will need to update the default documentation version in those links.

  • Install Ops Mart

If you are interested in a centralized data mart for your PDI job or PDI transformation logs, you can install DI Ops Mart.

  • Install drivers for your Hadoop clusters

If you use Hadoop clusters with your Pentaho products, you must re-install the drivers.

  • Set up password encryption

If you want to encrypt passwords currently stored as plain text in configuration files, you must set up your upgraded 9.1 Pentaho Server for password encryption.

Apply customizations

The Pentaho Upgrade Installer generates a CSV file containing the customized items you optionally specified to include or exclude from your upgrade to version 9.1. See Specify items to include or exclude for instructions.

For items you customized in version 9.0 that you optionally want to keep in the 9.1 upgrade, download a ZIP file containing the 9.1 versions of those items listed in the CSV file and merge your customizations with the 9.1 features available through the more up-to-date items. For example, the new 9.1 password encryption feature is a part of the 9.1 version of these items.

See Download the configuration files and Merge customizations into the configuration files for instructions.

Download the configuration files

Perform the following steps to download the 9.1 version of the items listed in the CSV file:

Procedure

  1. On the Customer Portal home page, sign in using the Pentaho support user name and password provided in your Pentaho Welcome Packet.

  2. Click Downloads, then click Pentaho 9.1 GA Release in the 9.x list.

  3. On the bottom of the Pentaho 9.1 GA Release page, browse the folders in the Box widget to find the Pentaho Optional Configs folder.

  4. Download the pentaho-optional-configs-9.1.0.0.zip file.

If needed, move the downloaded file to a temporary location on your machine.

Merge customizations into the configuration files

Perform the following steps to apply your customizations to the downloaded Pentaho 9.1 version of the configuration files:

Procedure

  1. Unzip the pentaho-optional-configs-9.1.0.0.zip file you dowloaded from the Customer Portal.

If you have not already downloaded the pentaho-optional-configs-9.1.0.0.zip file, see Download the configuration files for instructions.
  2. Edit any file you need or opt to update per your customizations and merge in your customizations.

  3. Save the file and continue editing other customizations until you have applied all of them.

  4. Copy the applied files to their applicable locations within your Pentaho distribution.

Results

Your customizations will now appear in your 9.1 Pentaho products.

Update the default documentation version link

The default URL of the online Pentaho documentation changes with each release. When upgrading, you may need to update this URL parameter in the pentaho.xml file.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the pentaho/server/pentaho-server/pentaho-solutions/system directory and open the pentaho.xml file with any text editor.

  2. Modify the following <documentation-url> line and replace the previous documentation value with the current documentation value: <documentation-url>https://help.pentaho.com/Documentation/9.1</documentation-url>

  3. Save and close the file.

Install Ops Mart

If you installed an Ops Mart as part of the previous Pentaho 7.x or 8.x upgrade, you do not have to reinstall it. If you are interested in installing and using DI Ops Mart, see Install DI Ops Mart.

Install drivers for your Hadoop clusters

If you use Hadoop clusters with your Pentaho products, after upgrading to version 9.1, you must install the drivers for the Hadoop clusters you want to access. To conserve memory and storage resources, these drivers are not automatically installed for your upgraded version 9.1 Pentaho products. You can install the specific drivers manually or through the PDI client. For instructions, see Set up the Pentaho Server to connect to a Hadoop cluster.

Set up password encryption

As an IT administrator, you may need to enhance your company's security by encrypting the passwords that are currently stored as plain text in configuration files, for example, if you want to meet specific server security levels for regulatory compliance. Before applying password encryption on your upgraded Pentaho 9.1 products, you must set up your upgraded 9.1 Pentaho Server to work with password encryption. See Setting up password encryption after upgrading for instructions.
